By the age of 8 or 9 most boys are mad about sports and video games and may also be fascinated by films that involve war, superheroes, or aliens. Anything that involves competition or shooting things will tend to be greatly appreciated although of course every child is an individual and there will be boys who appreciate more refined activities such as playing music or reading.

Here’s a sample of present ideas that are likely to appeal to boys aged eight or nine:

Football kit or equipment:

Whether we’re talking American Football or Soccer, nearly all boys are daft about football and will have their favourite team that they loyally support. If you look at any local park or school sports field you will see boys running around wearing their team’s kit and it’s often important to them that they have the most up to date version of the kit. Although parents may bemoan the need to splash out on new versions of their boy’s team shirts, you can be sure that this is a gift that will be appreciated and which will get great use. An alternative would be to buy them a football or some other element of equipment, ideally something that they don’t already have in their collection.

Of course, it’s not just football that boys are into. Many may prefer basketball, hockey, tennis, rugby, or some other sport but all offer great opportunities to purchase Christmas or birthday presents that will delight your young man.

Wii games console:

Although parents may worry about their son spending too much time playing computer games, the reality is that most boys have a games console by the age of 8 or 9 and it is likely that a games console will appear near the top of their gift wish list. And at least by selecting a Wii console you have the consolation of knowing that they will be forced to get some physical exercise as they play games such as Wii Tennis. Playing Wii can also involve all the family which can be a good way to bring the family together at Christmas, when your attempt to arrange a game of Trivial Pursuits fails!

Model Airfix items:

At the age of 8 or 9 most boys are fascinated by war but may just be outgrowing the toy tanks and soldiers that were such treasured presents from previous years. However, making and painting model tanks, warships, or aeroplanes can add a new dimension to their interest. Successfully putting together a World War Two Spitfire plane or Panzer tank will be extremely gratifying and these items can then either by hung from the ceiling (planes) or placed on their bedside shelves. You might also choose to supplement this gift by providing them with a book about the Second World War, such as the “Usborne Introduction to the Second World War”.

Pool table:

For those with sufficient room in their home, a pool table or small-sized snooker table can be a perfect gift for 8 or 9 year old boys. By this age their hand eye co-ordination will be good and they will probably have a strong sense of competitiveness. Having a pool table will enable them to play against siblings or friends and can be a social focal point, especially if the table is situated in an attic, basement, or games room.

Musical instrument:

When considering 8 or 9 year old boys as a group it’s inevitable that there’s a certain amount of stereotyping and not all boys of that age are sports and video game mad. For those who have shown an aptitude or interest in music, it could be a great moment to buy them their first guitar or keyboard. Just be prepared to endure the racket whilst they build up towards musical competence.

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien:

Boys often are slower to get into reading than girls but if there’s one book that’s likely to get them immersed in the joy of reading it’s Tolkien’s fantastical story of Bilbo Baggins and his adventure with a group of gold-loving dwarves.

Hopefully this sample of gift ideas has given you some thoughts on presents that would be ideal for your eight or nine year old boy. Remember though that all individuals are different so make sure that you’ve taken into consideration the hobbies and things that your particular 8 or 9 year old boy is into.
