Whether you are looking for hot fashion trends to help you find a Mother's Day gift, or you are a woman who is trying to figure out what's happening in the world of fashion, you are likely going to be pleased that this year's spring trends are very attractive, fun looking and hip. No matter how old your mother is, there is no reason why she can't feel like the paragon of fashion, either because of the great gift you find, or because she knows what the best buys of the season will be.

For women who don't feel that wearing shorts is age appropriate, knee pants are this year's new trend. Tunics, brightly colored t-shirts and tops are also popular. It is a season where clothing can easily be mixed and matched, and where little things can update an outfit without forcing you to spend a lot of money.

What is hot this spring?

There are lots of trends this spring, some of which have been around for a while and others that are newer. Tunics are very big, and they are well suited to women with most body types. Shirts and dresses that wrap are also fashionable, as are tops and dresses that have an empire waste. That emphasizes the smallest part of a woman, creating a very figure flattering look.

Hemlines run the gamut from long  to micro mini, or knee length. This goes for dresses, skirts and even shorts. Women who don't necessarily want to wear shorts may feel perfectly okay wearing knee length pants or gaucho pants (which can look like a skirt,) because these will be comfortable, fashionable and practical.

*Bags -

Bags are a big fashion accessory because they can transform a seemingly dull outfit into something that is much hipper. Bags come in a range of prices from very cheap to moderate or expensive. Be sure that the bag isn't overdone. A tiny person would look ridiculous with a gigantic bag. Conversely, a tall woman look equally silly with a small bag.

For spring, color is a great option in bags. Look for bright colors that can go with any outfit, and that can be used for casual wear or evening wear. Make sure that the bag you choose is suited to your personal needs. It is easy to get wrapped up in the desire to be "hip" and trendy and forget the utilitarian aspect of a bag.

*Scarves -

Scarves are another great way to dress up an outfit. They are a hot item this season, so a brightly colored scarf can add a touch of badly needed color to a plain suit, a pair of jeans, or even an uninspired shirt. The beauty of scarves is that they can be used to change the look of many outfits. They are also a great gift for someone who is looking for an unusual gift for mom, and one that might be practical.

*Shoes -

Shoes are another easy way to change the look of something you already have. You can take a pair of jeans and make them hipper by adding a pair of bright colored flat sandals. Places like Old Navy have wonderful buys on things like sandals, and for under $20, it is possible to change the look of anything.

*Jewelry -

For a mom who has pierced ears, earrings can always be a nice gift. For dress, look for chandelier type earrings with Swarovski crystals to give the look of real gems without the price. Hoops and eclectic hand made jewelry is also big. Bangles of different colors can be worn together to create a dressed up look with very little effort.

*Belts -

Belts are another cool way to dress up an outfit. We're not talking about the standard leather belt. Belts can be made out of fabric, rope, or even metal. Depending on the style, they can take a boring outfit and turn it into something that is very hip looking. Belts are also an inexpensive way to change the look of any outfit.

*Tunics -

Tunics are a popular type of top this season. As with Gaucho pants, tunics are a bit of a throw back from previous decades. Tunics are great because they can be paired with a multitude of things. Many tunics can be worn with jeans, with dress pants or with Capri pants or Gaucho pants.

These days, with an uncertain economy, the best fashion tips anyone can give any woman are tips that allow her to transform things that she already has. Most people can't afford to change their wardrobes every time the fashion changes. Thankfully, fashion gurus have become much more aware of that and are thinking of ways to help women update what they already have.

A little color, whether it be in the form of a bag, a pair of shoes, a scarf or a belt can do a lot to dress up an ordinary outfit. Bangle bracelets and earrings can also dress up outfits inexpensively. Any woman can be the paragon of fashion this Mother's Day simply by taking what she already has and using some accessories to change the look, and she won't have to break the bank to be stylish. Great places to find good bargains and some hip clothing include Old Navy, Target, JC Penny, Walmart, and of course, places like Tuesday Morning, Stein Mart, Ross Dress for Less, Marshalls and TJ Maxx.
